Salvation by works, Lesson 1

Romans 1:11 For I long to see you, that I may impart unto you some spiritual gift, to the end ye may be established;

We are to be established in the faith.

Romans 1:12 That is, that I may be comforted together with you by the mutual faith both of you and me.

Colossians 2:6 As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, [so] walk ye in him:

We are saved through faith, and we are to walk by faith so we should be stablished in the faith.

Colossians 2:7 Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.

A Christian should be rooted (vs. 7), grounded (1:23), settled (1:23), established (vs. 7), and built up (vs, 7) in the faith.

A Christian should be rooted and grounded in the solid Rock (Mt 7:24) and he will not be moved (Eph 4:14).

A Christian that is rooted and built up in the faith will be a Christian who is abounding therein with thanksgiving.

Let me give you some scripture for you to contemplate, memorize, and meditate.

1 Corinthians 2:14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know [them], because they are spiritually discerned.

In the context of 1 Corinthians 2:9-14 we learn that a lost person cannot know the things of the Spirit of God because he does not have the Spirit and the things of God are spiritually discerned.

A lost person can be reproved of sin and righteousness and judgment (John 16:7-11).

A lost man can know that he is lost, without God, without Christ, and without hope in this world (Ephesians 2:12).

A lost person can learn that Jesus Christ shed His blood (Ephesians 1:7), suffered in his stead, died, was buried, and rose again (1 Corinthians 15:3-4) for his justification (Romans 3:24).

After a lost person learns these truths and then chooses to turn to God; God will give him faith to trust Jesus Christ to be his Saviour (Romans 10:9-13).

This passage of scripture (1 Corinthians 2:9-14) does not exclude the lost person from knowing his need of a Saviour it simply says that the things of God are spiritually discerned.

is blood for him, suffered in his stead, died, was buried and rose from the dead.

1 Corinthians 2:15 But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man.

He that is spiritual does not judge people (Matthew 7:1-2), but he does judge all things.

1 Corinthians 2:16 For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.

You might be asking, “am I spiritual”.

The answer is, yes!

You are a spiritual being because you have been born again.

1 Corinthians 15:46 Howbeit that [was] not first which is spiritual, but that which is natural; and afterward that which is spiritual.

We were first a natural man, the worldly man, and then after salvation we are the spiritual man, the heavenly man.

When we were lost, we bore the image of Adam, the natural man, and after we are saved, we also bear the image of Christ, the spiritual man.

The Bible says of Jesus Christ,

Hebrews 1:3 Who being the brightness of [his] glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;

Jesus Christ, God manifest in the flesh, is the express image of God the Father.

Jesus Christ dwells in us thus we have the image of God dwelling in us.

Colossians 1:27 To whom God would make known what [is] the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory:

As saved individuals we bear both images; we are an old man, the natural man, “old Adam” and we have indwelling us a new man, the spiritual man which is Jesus Christ.

When Jesus Christ returns to take us out to be with Him, He will finish the work which He begun in us the moment of our salvation.

Philippians 1:6 Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform [it] until the day of Jesus Christ:

One of the works that God began in us was that of conforming us to the image of His Son. His Son

Romans 8:29 For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate [to be] conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.

When we got saved our destination was fixed, and our destination was to be like Jesus Christ in a glorified body without a sin nature.

Philippians 3:20 For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ:

Philippians 3:21 Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself.

Our vile body which we now dwell in will be changed “fashioned” like unto His glorious body.

1 John 3:1 Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.

1 John 3:2 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.

When Jesus Christ steps out into the air (1 Thessalonians 4:16-17) and calls us out to be with Him our vile bodies will be changed, and we shall be like Him.

We do not become God and we do not become gods; our vile body is changed and will be fashioned like unto His glorious glriousbody

We will no longer have a sin nature and we will live sinless for all of eternity.

The Lord begun a good work in us the very moment we got saved.

A portion of that work was conforming us to the image of Jesus Christ.

That work will be completed when we see Him.

Romans 8:22 For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now.

Romans 8:23 And not only [they], but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, [to wit], the redemption of our body.

We will someday bear the image of Jesus Christ in a glorified body, and we will no longer have the old man which is corrupt.

We will be complete spiritual beings on that day.

We are spiritual beings now because of salvation which puts us in Christ and Christ in us.

1 Corinthians 2:15 But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man.

We don’t judge people, but we do judge things such as “false teaching” and “false prophecy”.

It is not wrong to judge false teaching and false prophecy.

Jude 1:4 For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ.

2 Peter 2:1 But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction.

This is fulfilled prophecy.

There are false teachers among us and they teach damnable heresies.

2 Peter 2:2 And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of.

Notice the Bible says, “many shall follow their pernicious (Destructive) ways.

In chapter 2 of 2 Peter there are two classes of people that are discussed; they are “false prophets,” and “false teachers”.

The trouble in the churches of our day is “false teachers”.

Many of these false teachers are women and for women to teach Bible to men the Bible says,

1 Timothy 2:11 Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection.

1 Timothy 2:12 But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence.

This verse does not say that a woman cannot teach children or other women; it says she cannot be the teacher of men for when she does, she usurps authority over the man.

There will be women “false prophets” also in the last days.

Revelation 2:20 Notwithstanding I have a few things against thee, because thou sufferest that woman Jezebel, which calleth herself a prophetess, to teach and to seduce my servants to commit fornication, and to eat things sacrificed unto idols.

Most of our modern day “false teachers” are men and as we approach the second coming of Christ there are also many “false prophets”.

Matthew 24:11 And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many.

This is what we who are spiritual are to judge remembering that these people are being used of the devil who is a liar.

John 8:44 Ye are of [your] father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.

The devil is first introduced to us in Genesis chapter 3 and he lies to Eve.

1 Corinthians 2:16 For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.

Now that we are saved, we have the mind of Christ in our being (Christ in us) and in writing, the Bible and judgment of “false teachers” and “false prophets is something we are supposed to do.

1 Corinthians 2:15 But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man.

It is scriptural; to judge “false teachers”, and “false prophets”.

You can tell a great deal about a man’s religion by observing his starting point.

If the foundation is false, the doctrine will be false.

If the foundation is weak the structure will not stand.

Matthew 7:26 And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand:

Matthew 7:27 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.

It is a fact that where you begin will determine where you end.

The momentum of false doctrine concerning salvation will keep you going down hill until you wind up in hell.

The Bible instructs us not to neglect so great salvation which the Bible says is simple.

Hebrews 2:3 How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard [him];

2 Corinthians 11:3 But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.

The simplicity that is in Christ is this: Jesus Christ shed His blood (Ephesians 1:7), suffered the wrath of God in your stead (Matthew 27:45-46), died, was buried, and raised from the dead (1 Corinthians 15:3-4).

Someone may ask you, Acts 16:30 And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved?

And you answer them, Acts 16:31 And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.

You have answered their question without using philosophy, art, science, meditation, no good works are involved, no golden rule to be kept, no sacraments, no church membership, no baptism, no special feeling is required, no experience is necessary, and no speaking in tongues is required; you have introduced them to the Saviour and you have made salvation simple.

And salvation is just that simple.

Romans 10:13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
